Random Rants

I played in the live Tanner Evers Charity Event on Friday night. I was nearly felted before the first break but was able to chip up and get back into the game.

Two hands of note: 99 in the big blind against Jim UTG and Zach in the SB. Everyone was all in, Jim had A7 and Zack 33. Jim was the short stack and hit running 7s to tripple up. My 9s were good against Zach and I ended up just a bit and he was left with about 1 bet. Later on I was able to stay in cheap with JTs and rivered my flush. Wes pushed me in and I happily called. He had hit two pair. We hit the final table and it was nearly a crap shoot. I was one of the larger stacks (2nd or 3rd) and had about 1/3 the stack of the chip leader. I was able to work a decent stack up and watch the attrition. It ended when Melissa and I were heads up and I pushed from the BB into her limp from the button. She had kings and I was done. The game lasted 6+ hours, and I was beat tired. For my efforts I got a $100 gift certificate to BBQ Pits from Henry and Carol.

No other poker this weekend.

Football! I watched Texas get smoked Saturday night. It wasn’t pretty. They slipped to 8th in the rankings which seems pretty harsh considering they lost to the #1 team. I hope this isn’t the end of this type of out-of-conference match-ups. It would be great to see more ACC-SEC-Big 10-Big 12-Pac 10 match-ups between perenial top 25 teams. The Hokies won (mostly *not* in the 1st quarter) and moved to 14th. They should be able to get into the top 10 this year even having to play BC, Miami, and Virginia. Luckily FSU is not on the schedule.

I spent Sunday recovering, Saturday was a long one. I did finish the new Jeffrey Archer book _False Impression_. It was pretty good, I’m going to go back and get some of his older stuff because I enjoy his style a lot. I now have a few poker books and two “critical thinking” type books on my reading list. Speaking of poker books, my folks sent me Scott Gallant’s book _Pressure Poker_; it arrived today and will be put on the reading stack.

ACL Festival starts in 4 days. It looks like it will be in the low 90s. I’m was hoping for upper 80s, but I’ll take it.

Off to the dentist today. Yeah! Or not.

Check out this solution to telemarketers. I’ll have to look into that one.

No work on the table this week. Since the weather is cooler today, I might try and epoxy the legs on tonight. Then I can stain and finish the base before finallizing the table mount. Pics will follow.

Very little poker. A bit of 25c/50c for the Low Limit Challenge and exactly one 10+1 SnG where I ended up third pushing AJs into 66 preflop.

I tried to play golf Tuesday morning but the only storm for the last 2 or 3 months hit while we were on the fairway for 1. We sat in the clubhouse for 30 minutes but it wasn’t going to let up. Luckily I didn’t pay yet (the guy was late and I was going to pay on the turn) so I only wasted sleep.

I ordered SunRocket last night. I got the $10 a month plan, which is 1/2 of my AT&T plan, and has Caller ID and other things I will never use. It should work with my DirecTV and might even work with my TiVo. They claim they can transfer my number from AT&T, so I don’t have to update everyone’s info (banks and the like).

I’ll let you know how it goes. If you want to signup, let me know and I will give you my referal code (which is my phone number). Right now they have 3 months free with the $10 plan, and the $200 a year plan gives you a free Uniden phone setup. Pretty cool.

There is a neat video I found via Digg about how to perform perfect golf swing. I have been swinging for about 20 years now, but learned a few things. Hopefully some these tips will take a bit of the wildness out of my swing and get some consitancy. I’m going to try and play twice next week. Tuesday at Forest Creek and Wednesday at Roy Kizer here in Austin.

I got my TurboNET card in this week for my TiVo and I have a “wireless” solution from Logitech coming in soon (and no, I didn’t pay $100 for it- eBay rocks). The plan is to put my TiVo on my LAN so it doesn’t use the phone. A lot of people claim it does not work well over VoIP which SunRocket is.

Thanks to JohnnyMac and Gary Carson for posting on my last rant.

Dublin Mudslide

It just *sounds* dirty. (Found on The Sneeze)

No poker last night. 1759 meeting, then I hung out with Casie and Lindsay for a few beers. I went to bed early to play golf this morning, but Jason called in sick. He sounded it. My new driver should be delivered today.

I’m also getting a DirectTiVo to hook my Series 1 up to my home LAN. AT&T just jacked my phone rate and that just pisses me off. Does anyone know of a home phone service *less* than $20 a month? I don’t actually use it so I really don’t think I need to pay $22 or whatever for it. It sends nearly $300 down the drain every year which could be used for airfare to Vegas.

I just upgraded to WordPress 2.0.4. So far everything *seems* to be working. We’ll see.

Only 99 here today, 100 forcasted for tomorrow and that doesn’t count the heat index. It is going to be tough to mow the lawn this weekend.

Have a great weekend everyone!

back to ATX

I’m back. I got in about noon yesterday and hit BD Riley’s for a 42 Tournament. That is dominos for the un-civilized people.

No poker last week. If you don’t count teaching my neice and nephew 5 card draw and 7 card stud. They didn’t know anything- not even hand ranks so we didn’t really bet. Grandma pulled out pennies so we played penny ante, no betting poker. They started to get the hang of it. They kept wanting to know how to play the “hardest” poker game. I had a hard time thinking if it was Omaha Hi-Lo, Stud Hi-Lo, Razz, or Deuce-Seven. No, I didn’t try to teach them any of those. They are eight by the way. Oh, and I won 3 pennies. Bad man. I know.

Got to play golf with my Dad and brother on Friday. I tried hitting my 3 wood for the first time 20 minutes before the round. Not good results. Because of that I shot a 56 on the front. When I put it in the bag for good and hit 3 iron off the tee I got better. I started to work my draw. I played one of the toughest par 4s all year. 90 degree dog-leg left. 150 to the bend. 225 from the bend to the green. The bend is at the same level as the green but there is a good 30 or 35 yard drop to a ravine in the middle. I shorted the green and ended up with a 6 giving me a 52 on the back. I could get under 100 in 3 rounds there. It is all course management. I think I am going to pick up a hybrid as well. I might be able to swap my 3-iron for it. Hopefully my re-headed driver comes in this week. I have a 6:51 tomorrow morning at Forest Creek, and it would be nice to have my driver back.

I need to complete a bunch of 45 person SnGs this week for the challenge. I need to ace a few to even be in contention.

Got back to catching up on BlogLines. Only 430ish Poker entries to read and another 100 or so others. Yeah, don’t think I will be reading most of those well.

I actually used allofmp3.com today. That service really is pretty good. I pulled down a bunch of albums (Chris Rea, Hard-Fi, Bob Marley) and pulled in some random songs I was looking for. At 10c a piece (about) you can get a lot of song for the money. I will probably have to put some more money on later in the week- but not too much, it is so easy it will probably end up like crack. Music crack. Mmmmm.

Off to the grocery store, then laundry, then poker. I might even head out for a few beers at a nicely named place: C Hunt’s Ice House. Yeah. You read that right. I have a few friends who work there on Mondays.

Via a friend, I found this post. It is a very interesting read. Hopefully you can spare the two minutes or so to read it.

I was going to put some money in my allofmp3.com account but ran into two snags: 1st I wanted to use PayPal (probably via XHost) but they no longer accept that. Then I recalled I can create “virtual account numbers” for my MasterCard. Perfect for this kind of thing. Yeah. They accept Visa but not MasterCard. Very odd since their CC processor (ChronoPay) advertises MasterCard as a valid payment form and allofmp3 claims you can use either. Oh well. They are getting none of my money.

I was pretty dumb a bit ago and used iTunes on my work laptop to purchase some content. I say dumb because I am going to have to turn this laptop in next March when they “lean the workforce”. I wanted to make sure my playlists and ratings from my work laptop made it to my home PC where I want to store all of my music. This is how I made sure everything got copied.

  • Step 1: Clear out the target machines iTunes library. I didn’t want any extra songs clogging my library.
  • Step 2: Create a folder to match the layout on the current iTunes install. Mine is D:Music.
  • Step 3: Copy all of the folders in that Music folder to the target machine. This took my home network (100MB) about 30 minutes.
  • Step 4: Export your library. File->Export Library…
  • Step 5: Copy that library.xml file to the target machine
  • Step 6: Import the library. File->Import… Locate the XML file and click open. This takes a few minutes for my library, but not too bad
  • Step 7: Delete any duplicate playlists. The old playlists will get migrated with the library.xml file
  • Step 8: Try and play any purchased songs. This will require you to authorize this machine with your iTunes login.
  • Step 9: Optional: De-authorize the old machine. Advanced->Deauthorize Computer… I will do this before I turn in my laptop so I have an extra one. You get 5 machines for authorized music.

Actually pretty simple, and everything gets copied including playlists, play counts, ratings, and podcasts. I will probably figure out a way to sync that D:Music folder so I can do a non-drive backup and sync between my home PC and the laptop. It won’t preserve all of my rating changes, and that sucks- but not much you can do about it except keep exporting and importing every time.

Off to get some peel and eat shrimp. Have a great weekend.

K-Nine, a friend of mine, has a very interesting blog- although not poker related. Today’s post puts him back on a series called “Naked Lunch Specials” where he reviews the lunch offerings of, ahem, adult venues.

1-6-1 in three six-pack SnGs of late. 18th in the Mook last night. Good fun, but it sucks to get short stacked.
